Natural Nutrition ranks highly in Australian Bush Food
Australian bush food has a lot to offer in natural nutrition for health. It is relatively new at being promoted. But that is changing. Benefits of industry, governments and educational institutions involvement, are that they are working with Aboriginal communities to train and educate, create employment prospects and best of all assisting to preserve their and our heritage food sources by placing them in our staple diet. The benefits include: - Conserving wild resources - Protects biodiversity - Enhances Aboriginal knowledge and folklore - Contributes to reducing salinity - Diversity in farmers crops creating a more stable ecomonic approach to farming in this dry country - Employment for rural communities and the aborginal people Research by govt. laboratories (CSIRO) have found that comparing some of the native foods to other known foods such as blueberries for a TEAC value, the native foods have come out far higher than ever expected. Tests showed that the TEAC value for blueberries is 39.45 trolox equivalent per gram compared to Kakadu Plum which was 204.8 trolox equivalent per gram. (Data obtained from the Commonwealth Scientific Industry Research Organistation) Not only is there the benefit of extremely high antioxidant ratings but these unique food sources have flavours not traditionally utilised before.
