Diabetes is a huge health care issue!
Diabetes is a condition when the blood glucose (sugar) is at high levels. Blood glucose is what our bodies rely upon for energy. The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin which stimulates cell activity to use the glucose as energy. Insulin regulates the blood glucose levels. Diabetes is when the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the cells do not respond to the insulin. Two main types Type 1 – Insulin dependant; caused by an auto-immune destruction of the pancreas cells that make the insulin. It is very common in developed countries and occurs at any age. Type 2 – Non-insulin dependant: either not enough insulin is produced or the insulin does not work properly. Often caused when over 40 years and can be associated with obesity. This also is very common in developed countries. Symptoms include: tiredness, blurred vision, thirst and increased infections. Long term damage can be caused to the kidneys, eyes, nerves, heart and impotence if it is not treated properly Currently there is no known cure but health professionals are having success in controlling the glucose levels, blood pressure, weight and blood fat levels. The treatment revolves around nutritional diet, exercise, not smoking and replacing insulin to control the blood glucose levels.
