Nutrition and medical benefits of flaxseed
Flaxseed has been used for centuaries for its nutrition and use as an oil (commonly known as Linseed Oil). It has also been used for its fibre content, mostly in the form of cloth, paper and many tools of trade such as fishing nets. The oils are used as a form of nutirition and in general to preserve wood. Studies have shown the plant contains high levels of lignans (a form of antioxidant) which is believed to assist in the fight against certain forms of cancers including breast, prostrate and specific tumors. It also contains Omega 3 fatty acids which are required in our diet and derived from food sources. Omega 3 fatty acids consist of 3 types. Flaxseed contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which is one, the others are contained in foods such as fish oil. Clinical studies of omega 3 fatty acids appear to be helpful in treating cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease and some cancers. By controlling sugar levels and cholesterol, promotes weightloss and healthy skin.

Lignans, in new clinical studies are showing results in postrate problems, menopause, inflammation, acne, hair loss, bone health, breast and heart disease.One study recorded a 78 per cent reduction in the risk of breast cancer in pre-menopausal women. (USA study) Another area of study currently being reviewed is hair loss. Reports showed that male participants used a daily supplement of 250 mg of flaxseed extract demonstrated 90 percent showed improvements in hair loss problems and 5 per cent noticed a decrease in oil secretion in the scalp.
