Absorption of iron is a very important functon in our body, as it forms part of the haemoglobin (red pigment in blood that carries oxygen to the cells in your tissues). Your body will absorb iron at different rates, depending on what you eat, if pregnant and your individual absorption rate. I was diagnosed and have taken iron tablets for many years. Once I started researching about commercial supplements, I decided to give natural nutrition a go. First I started with several food types, but I ended up finding a simpler way which had many other benefits for health in general. Including reducing other medical conditions like

Iron comes from the food we eat or processed supplements. There are two types of iron in food, which are absorbed differently, these are Haem iron - located in red meat and is the easiest to absorb. (good source) Non-heam iron - found in plant based foods like fruit, vegetable and cereals. Harder to absorb. Not as hard to absord though than cheaply made mineral based supplements.
Symptoms
Include tiredness, irritability and difficulty concentrating.Once the iron reserves are used, the blood cell production decreases and you have iron deficient anaemia. You have now become rundown, increasing the risk of infection. It is not fatal but you are not the healthiest person to be around. A simple blood test will establish your iron levels. This is one of the first tests conducted by the medical profession to eliminate it as the cause of your illness. To improve the situation it is best to regularly take food sources that provide a balanced amount of iron each day. Taking iron tablets should be a last resort as a healthy wholefood approach is more beneficial. Taking supplement tablets can lead to an overload in your body and its harder to digest, wasting valuable energy.
