Eat for health and reduce the effects of menopause

Research into womens health and having personally experienced symptoms of menopause, I have put together a series of facts and options that can assist others.

Difficulty with menopause

Interesting to note that many cultures have little issues associated with menopause but in western society when we expose our bodies to unhealthy diets and prolonged stress, many women suffer the effects.

Hot flushes appear to be the result of a liver that is not functioning to full capacity. The liver breaks down excess hormones but if for a variety of reasons such as long term stress exposure, the liver becomes non effective and shows up as a symptom in hot flushes.

Long term stress is a human response that originally was a defence to fight the percieved danger or to evacuate, but in todays society that has changed and the stresses of everyday living is something we can not escape easily. Stress at work, travelling in traffic, relationships etc its all a buildup of stresses. The body has set up a series of responses to deal with stress. It suspends processes such as digestion so the blood which carries critical nutrients, is diverted to what the body percieves as a threat.

Once the threat or stress has gone, the body returns to normal but with long term exposure to stress, the body is not able to return to normal and opens up a whole series of symptoms usually associated with the digestive and bowel systems.

Potential treatments

It should be noted that when your body is working at best, very few menopausal symptoms may appear. One of the first processes a good health care professional will prescribe is a supplement that will increase liver function and metabolism. Having said that you should be careful what formulas are prescribed as the use of some will cause uterine fibroids. Many women are unaware they have them but a symptom can be heavy bleeding and medical advice should be obtained.

Literature is showing that the most effective herbal remedy is the use of Asparagus (Asparagus racemosa) and can be used for any age group experiencing symptoms from period pain to menopause. It has digestive and gut emptying properties, allowing the bowel patterns to normalise and the bloating effect to be minimalised. In addition, asparagus allows the nutrients to be absorbed more readily and allows for a better wellbeing.

This can be seen in the nutrients of B6 and zinc (both are in asparagus), which are the precursors to the production of the feel good chemicals of serotonin and dopamine. These in conjunction with the progesterone assist in restoring mental function. If these are low you feel sad.

Asparagus as a hormone normaliser- adjusts progesterone imblances-improves gut function allowing B6 and zinc to be absorbed-contains vitamin C which is required to function the adrenal glands and boost the immune system.

The root of the asparagus works better than processed powders or liquids unless it is a wholefood puree. About 1 to 4 grams a day is enough.

For total wellbeing, asparagus will not be enough. Good nutrition in the diet is the key. I recommend a broad spectrum blend of specially selected foods from around the world to enhance the energy levels and vitality. I now have taken both and find that coping is much easier.
