Learn More About What Most Hoof Oils contain?

The following ingredigents are in most commercial hoof oils and grease. Donnybrook has taken care in studying how the hoof works and what green friendly natural ingredients can do to the body. We have combined them to formulate a product that absorbs into the keratin wall and feed nutrients including a range of antioxidants, locally where the hoof needs it. Thus works as a barrier, moisturiser, improves cellular structure and boost immunity. Thats not stated on most other commercial products. To know what is placed in most hoof oils and conditioners is important as you need to choose a product that is really working.

Most commercial oils/conditioners contain a combination of several or all of the following:

Neatsfoot Oil- a yellow oil from the feet and leg bones of cattle, then rendered, refined and purified using various chemicals. This is not a natural hoof oil as it has been processed and rendered. Other fats from different animals or birds such as emu or goose is also sometimes used in hoof oil. Same processes apply. The raw animal materials are rendered down through a process of heat, separating the oils from the flesh. Then collected and processedas Neatsfoot Oil and used in many industries. One of those is the equine industry.

Stockholm Tar - (Wood Oil) is a high grade pine tar which, in industry, was used in maritime applications to waterproof various components of the ship. Made by burning pine at low temperatures and the tar(resin) is collected as it runs out. It is anatural product but extracted from pine when it isburnt to make coal. Used as a barrier material. Thereforedoes not allow moisture in but it also does not allow the hood the breathe.

Silicone - Silicone caulk is made by reducing silica sand into a basic silicone oil polymer. Used mostly in the building trade to fill cracks that frequently move. Used in hoof oil to fill cracks and put a waterproofing coat over the outer part of the hoof. Does not have a tendancy to allow the hoof to breath as more natural substances do.

Eucalyptus oil - oil extracted by distilling the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. Has anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti viral properties. This is a natural oil.

Oils used in most hoof oils are usually highly refined and devoid of most natural protective anti-oxidants. The animals if not chemically treated may already be very rancid.

Care of the Hoof

When a horse is young, the body is healthy and the components of the hoof are smooth, elastic and supple. The hoof is exposed to a variety of elements which will deplete the oils, causing cracking and dryness. This combined with natural aging processes will contribute to, amongst other things, hoof ailments.

When the body ages, so does the hoof. In the hoof, is connective tissue, cartilage and the inner white line, underneath the wall. These harden and lose both elasticity and strength. The hoof loses its ability to hold itself together and cracks begin to form.

Using the oil in winter is essential as the hoof will be exposed to a lot more moisture. Moisture contains bacteria, fungus or other potential infections, which the horse needs to fight off with its immune system.

Seedy toe is where there are fine cracks and the water (carrying potential disease) harbours in a warm and protected place. It is a perfect place for disease to breed. Donnybrook Hoof Care Products are formulated to make a truly natural hoof oil, that not only protects the hoof from getting the small cracks, it also has many therapeutic properties due to its high antioxidant potency. No other hoof oil on the market can do that unless they contain these similar unrefined ingredients.

TIPS on Re-hydration

Research has shown that if a surface has water applied and it is allowed to be absorbed, when a conditioner is applied, the oils assist in retaining that moisture on the surface. Thus the surface is better re-hydrated. So in damper conditions when the hoof is damp due to moisture from the environment, applying hoof conditioner will assist in retaining that moisture. In dry conditions, apply water to the hoof and stand until it has absorbed, then apply the conditioner. A hoof that is well nourished and hydrated will be better able to resist infection, stress and damage.
