Why go to the trouble of foraging for wild harvest plants?
To wild harvest means to pick the ripe fruits from the earth. To gather means to forage amongst the plant life to find that elusive quest. In more traditional times, the participation of humans with harvesting provided an interaction that wrote folk-lore and intertwined humans and nature co-existing for centuries. The importance of gathering plants from this environment is found in the fact that you will enrich your palette with full bodied flavours and aromas both raw and when cooking in the kitchen. The plants are often more intensely flavoured than the domesticated varieties, due mainly to the environment the plants grow in, often harsher and more nutrient diverse. With this in mind, it is no wonder that many of the new beverages with nutritional value are coming to the fore. Chefs from around the world are clamouring to find that ‘niche’ food source to make a creation. Here in Australia, a very old land has much to offer and we are only just beginning to unlock the secrets that the true native indigenous people have passed down from century to century. Having sustained a culture and lifespans that are the longest recorded. We are moving forward to preserve a sustainable future of indigenous knowledge and maintaining the integrity of that heritage. We can learn so much from the native people of this land that will show us a way to better health and well being.
